Frequently Asked Questions
Clarigent Mental Health Assessment

General Questions and Privacy

What is included in Clarigent’s Mental Health Assessment?

It includes two parts. The first is the Clairity screener which measures your mental health in 5-10 minutes. The second part includes a 45–60-minute counseling session with a mental health professional to discuss your confidential results and recommend any follow-ups. This is a streamlined process, no waiting and no appointment needed.

How is this different than 988?

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (formerly known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline) is a United States-based suicide prevention network of over 200+ crisis centers that provides 24/7 service via a toll-free hotline with the number 9-8-8. It is available to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. The caller is routed to their nearest crisis center to receive mental health support and local mental health referrals. If you are currently in suicidal crisis or emotional distress, please call 9-8-8.  Clarigent Health is geared to detect subtler or hidden warning signs of mental health risks for anxiety, depression, and suicidality.

How is this different than other mental health screeners?

Clairity conducts a comprehensive screening for anxiety, depression, and suicidality, within the framework of a single interview. Clairity streamlines the screening process and removes the need to complete three distinct mental health surveys. Furthermore, existing screening measures rely on individuals to report their frequency of mental health symptoms over a history of time, typically ranging from the past two weeks to one month. Clairity diverges from patient symptom reports and analyzes language for thousands of thought markers of risk. Our platform expedites the entire process by transmitting screening results to a clinician for an immediate review.

The core technology behind Clairity has been researched and developed for almost 20 years. It originated at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where initial machine learning models were developed using the then largest collection of suicide notes donated by bereaved loved ones. Clinical research demonstrated machine learning algorithms can detect small differences in a person’s language to identify suicide risk. Models were later developed to also detect the presence of depression and anxiety.[AH1] [JC2] [JC3]

Does talking about depression, anxiety, or suicide increase the likelihood of suicide?

Contrary to common misconception, it has been demonstrated that discussing suicide does not increase the likelihood of suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts. Similarly, discussions about anxiety and depression do not inherently increase the likelihood of experiencing these conditions. Open and candid conversations about mental health foster a positive impact on an individual’s well-being. At Clarigent Health, we provide a supportive environment that offers valuable insights, deepens understanding, and empowers individuals to take proactive steps toward addressing their mental well-being.

What ages is this appropriate for?

Currently, Clarigent’s Mental Health Assessment is available for anyone 18+ years of age. It will soon be available for 12 to 17-year-old kids.

How do you keep my data secure and private?

The data collected from you is kept confidential and secure by Clarigent Health and meets all HIPAA requirements for protection of healthcare data. Your data will always be encrypted and will never be shared with others. Privacy is also your responsibility and to protect your health information you need to choose a private location to complete the Clarigent Mental Health Assessment.

Purchase and Usage

Can I use my health insurance to pay for the Clarigent Mental Health Assessment?

No. Clarigent’s Mental Health Assessment is priced to be on par (or in many cases lower) than a typical paid counseling session with a medical health professional. However, if the mental health professional doing your session recommends follow-up actions, you can investigate if those can be covered by your health insurance. For example, if they recommend additional counseling sessions, you can work with your provider to identify an in-network resource.

Can I do the mental health assessment more than once?

Yes. You can complete it as many times as you like. For example, you could purchase a 4-pack of assessments and do an assessment every 3 months. We recommend waiting at least two weeks before doing another assessment. Clarigent Health is geared to detect subtler or hidden warning signs. If you are currently in suicidal crisis or emotional distress, please call 9-8-8.

Can I purchase the mental health assessment for other people or send it as a gift?

Yes. You can purchase Clarigent’s Mental Health Assessment for anyone 18+ of age. Within a few minutes of completing your purchase, you will receive an email with instructions to forward to the individual who will be completing the assessment.

If I purchase a 4-pack of mental health assessments, do they have to be used on the same person?

No. You can perform a single assessment on four different people, a single assessment on two people and two assessments on person, etc. You can mix and match any combination.

What happens after I purchase Clarigent’s Mental Health Assessment?

Within a few minutes of completing your purchase, you will receive an email with directions to complete the assessment.

Clairity Screener

What are the technical requirements to complete a screener?

You need a Wifi connected device (laptop, tablet, or mobile), microphone (built-in or connected to your device), internet browser, and a quiet space free of distractions to do your screener.

Who conducts the screener?

You will speak with one of Clairity’s virtual agents. They will communicate with you through your device’s speakers and microphone. A virtual agent is very similar to an avatar. For example, one of our virtual agents is an owl named Claire.

What types of questions will the virtual agent ask?

Clairity’s virtual agent will ask open-ended questions about your emotions, such as hope and fear. The screening will not directly ask about depression, anxiety, or suicide. You will give your answers verbally.

How long does the screener take?

It will take 5-10 minutes to complete.

How does the screener work?

Just like an X-ray, MRI, or blood test can provide physicians with objective biological metrics (biomarkers) about physical health, Clarigent Health uses vocal biomarkers to help mental health professionals detect subtle warning signs for mental health risks.

How was the screener developed?

The core technology has been researched and developed for almost 20 years. It originated at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where analyses were done on the largest ever collection of suicide notes donated by bereaved families. Clinical research proved machine learning algorithms could pick up small differences in a person’s language to identify suicide risk. Algorithms were later refined to also detect risks of depression and anxiety. More detail is available on the website under the technology and publications menu.

Will I get a written report or a copy of my screener results?

No. Clairity is a decision support screening tool for the mental health professional, not a diagnostic test. The mental health professional will evaluate both your Clairity screener results and your counseling session discussion to make a final determination of your risk level and any follow-up care required.

Follow-up Counseling Session

What are the technical requirements to complete a counseling session?

You can complete a counseling session via video or phone. We recommend video where possible. For video, you need a Wifi connected device (laptop, tablet, or mobile), microphone (built-in or connected to your device), internet browser, and a quiet space free of distractions to do your counseling session.

When will I have my follow-up counseling session?

You will be provided with the ability to connect with a counselor immediately following your Clairity Screening to discuss your confidential results with a mental health professional. Once you have finished the screener, please check your email for instructions. Follow-up consultations typically last 45-60 minutes. We recommend you connect with them immediately after the screening to discuss your results.

Who conducts the counseling session?

You will speak with one of our licensed mental health professionals. If using the video option, they will communicate with you through your device’s camera, speakers, and microphone.

What will we discuss in the counseling session?

Mental health professionals will discuss your Clairity screener results and the reason for your call.

How long does a counseling session take?

It will take 45-60 minutes to complete.

How am I assigned a mental health professional?

You will be randomly assigned one based on availability.

Will I get a diagnosis from the mental health professional?

No, not in the initial counseling session. This also means you will not be prescribed any prescription medications. If recommended, the mental health professional will talk through suggested follow-ups for your care.

Can I get more counseling sessions through Clarigent Health (without the Clairity screener)?

Not as this time. We are exploring options to make this service available in the future. Currently, each Clarigent Mental Health Assessment includes only one Clairity screener and only one follow-up counseling session.

What if the mental health professional determines I am high risk for suicide, depression, or anxiety?

This determination will be made by the mental health professional in your counseling session. They will direct you on the appropriate follow-ups. If you are currently in suicidal crisis or emotional distress, please call 9-8-8 (National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Other resources may be found here.

Should I share my results with my primary care or other doctor?

We encourage sharing any recommended follow-ups with your doctor(s) as appropriate. In the end, it’s a personal choice.

“More than 55 million Americans are suffering with their mental health and regrettably a significant portion go unnoticed due to deficiencies in screening processes and prolonged waits to access services. It is evident that there is a pressing need for more effective self-care solutions capable of identifying early warning signs and ensuring individuals receive the care they deserve.”
